AO3 at A-level: build chains of reasoning, not bullet lists

Elaborative interrogation and ‘because → therefore’ structure

AO3 marks reward developed analysis: multiple linked ideas, mechanisms, and often use of stimulus material. Bullet lists of isolated facts rarely reach top bands because they don’t show how factors interact.

Evidence-linked study habit

Dunlosky et al. (2013) reviewed learning techniques; elaborative interrogation (asking ‘why is this true?’) has moderate utility and maps well onto building analytical chains in humanities and social sciences. Weak vs strong AO3

Weak (thin AO3)Strong (developed AO3)
Demand falls so revenue drops.Demand falls — shown by the 12% volume decrease — so if price is sticky in the short run, total revenue falls because P × Q moves with quantity; elasticity determines how far.

Connective toolkit

  • because / as a result / this implies / which leads to
  • however / conversely / a limitation of this view is
  • in the short run vs long run / ceteris paribus vs if we relax the assumption
