Relative deprivation vs marginalisation
Young distinguishes relative deprivation (feeling excluded from consumption society despite some resources) from marginalisation (actual exclusion from legitimate opportunity and community institutions).
Real World
A young person in a deprived UK city who sees designer trainers and smartphones constantly advertised but cannot afford them may feel relatively deprived; if they are also excluded from school and employment, that marginalisation removes any stake in conforming to the law.
Exam Focus
Don't conflate the two terms — examiners deduct marks; relative deprivation is a feeling, marginalisation is a structural position.
