Conjugal roles
The roles and responsibilities of married or cohabiting partners in a relationship. Conjugal roles can be segregated (separate, specialised roles) or joint (overlapping, interchangeable roles).
Real World
In a 2016 ONS survey, UK women in dual-income households still performed an average of 60% more unpaid housework than their male partners, illustrating that joint conjugal roles remain aspirational rather than fully achieved for many couples.
Exam Focus
Always define both segregated and joint conjugal roles before evaluating — markers expect clear conceptual distinction.
