Rationalisation and disenchantment
Weber's concept that modern society increasingly emphasises instrumental rationality (efficiency, calculation), replacing traditional and affective motivations, 'disenchanting' the world.
Real World
McDonald's standardises every burger to the second and measures staff efficiency by throughput — Weber would call this rationalisation in action, stripping the craft and meaning from cooking and replacing it with pure calculation.
Exam Focus
When 'explain' or 'analyse' appears, link rationalisation explicitly to loss of meaning — examiners reward the disenchantment dimension, not just bureaucracy.
