William James
American psychologist and philosopher (1842–1910) who pioneered the empirical study of religious experience. His work The Varieties of Religious Experience identified four characteristics of mystical states: ineffability, noetic quality, transiency, and passivity. James argued that religious experience provided legitimate evidence for transcendence, though subjective and individual.
Real World
Poet and mystic Thomas Merton described his experience in Louisville's shopping district as a sudden overwhelming love for all humanity — an account James would classify as ineffable, noetic, transient, and passive.
Exam Focus
Memorise James's four characteristics using the mnemonic INTP; examiners reward precise terminology over vague description of 'special feelings'.
