Science and Religion: Barbour's 4 Models
Ian Barbour identifies four relationships between science and religion: conflict (they contradict), independence (different domains), dialogue (they inform each other), integration (unified worldview).
Real World
The conflict model is exemplified by Richard Dawkins's 'The God Delusion' (2006), while the integration model is represented by Teilhard de Chardin, whose evolutionary theology attempted a unified scientific-theological vision of the cosmos.
Exam Focus
Use Barbour's four categories as an organising framework in essay introductions to demonstrate systematic knowledge before evaluating specific thinkers.
