Compatibilism
The position that free will and causal determinism are compatible. Free will doesn't require the ability to do otherwise but rather freedom from external constraint or coercion. A person is free (and thus morally responsible) if acting from internal desires and beliefs without external force, even if the action is determined. Hume developed this influential view.
Real World
A recovering addict who chooses sobriety after years of dependency illustrates compatibilism: though shaped by biology and history, acting freely means acting on one's own deliberated desires without external coercion.
Exam Focus
Always define what compatibilists mean by 'free will' early in your answer; failing to do so is the most common reason marks are lost.
