Aquinas
Medieval Dominican friar and Doctor of the Church who synthesized Aristotelian philosophy with Christian theology. Aquinas developed natural law ethics, formulated the Five Ways (cosmological and teleological arguments for God), and integrated reason and faith. His Summa Theologiae remains Christianity's most influential systematic theology.
Real World
Pope Leo XIII declared Aquinas' philosophy the official basis for Catholic teaching in 1879, and his natural law ethics still underpin the Catholic Church's positions on issues like euthanasia and contraception today.
Exam Focus
When discussing Aquinas, distinguish his use of Aristotelian reason from Augustine's faith-based approach to avoid conflating traditions.
