Emotivism
The meta-ethical position that moral statements express emotions or attitudes rather than factual claims. 'Murder is wrong' means 'I disapprove of murder' or 'Boo to murder!' Moral language lacks propositional truth-value; it is non-cognitivist. Emotivism denies objective moral facts, treating morality as subjective expression.
Real World
When protestors and counter-protestors clashed over fox hunting in the UK, emotivists like Ayer would say neither side is stating facts — each group is simply expressing opposing emotional attitudes, not discovering moral truths.
Exam Focus
Always state that emotivism is non-cognitivist and explain what that means — answers that omit this distinction rarely access the top band.
