The multi-store model of memory: sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM)
The multi-store model describes memory as three separate stores. Information flows from the sensory register into short-term memory, and then into long-term memory.
Real World
When you glance at a number plate on a passing car, the image briefly enters your sensory register; if you actively repeat the letters aloud (rehearsal), they move into short-term memory, and with enough repetition they may be stored in long-term memory.
Exam Focus
Draw and label the MSM diagram (SR → STM → LTM with rehearsal loop) — a clear diagram can earn marks even if your written explanation is brief.
Evaluation Scaffold
A four-step framework for high-quality evaluation. Use this for 'assess', 'evaluate', and 'to what extent' questions.
