Features of the working memory model: coding and capacity
Each part of working memory handles a different type of information. The phonological loop processes sounds, the visuo-spatial sketchpad processes visual and spatial information, and each component has a limited capacity.
Real World
Baddeley et al. (1975) found that people recall fewer long words than short words in immediate memory tasks — the word-length effect — because the phonological loop can only hold about two seconds of spoken material, so longer words use up its limited capacity faster.
Exam Focus
Link coding type to the correct component — state acoustic coding for the phonological loop, visual coding for the visuo-spatial sketchpad.
Evaluation Scaffold
A four-step framework for high-quality evaluation. Use this for 'assess', 'evaluate', and 'to what extent' questions.
