Types of long-term memory: episodic, semantic, procedural
Long-term memory (LTM) splits into three types. Episodic memory stores personal experiences, semantic memory stores facts and knowledge, and procedural memory stores how to perform skills.
Real World
When Clive Wearing, a musician with severe amnesia, lost his episodic memory after a brain infection, he could no longer remember events from his life — yet he could still sight-read and play complex piano pieces, demonstrating that his procedural memory remained intact even when other LTM types were destroyed.
Exam Focus
When asked to 'outline' LTM types, give one distinct feature and a unique example for each type to access full marks.
Evaluation Scaffold
