Additional Member System
A mixed electoral system combining FPTP constituency seats with proportional regional list seats, used for Scottish Parliament and Welsh Senedd elections.
Real World
In the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, the SNP won 64 of 73 constituency seats but the regional list seats reduced this dominance, allowing the Greens to win 7 seats and ultimately form a co-operation agreement with the SNP — an outcome impossible under pure FPTP.
Exam Focus
Clearly explain the corrective function of list seats when comparing AMS to FPTP; many students describe AMS without explaining how proportionality is achieved.
