Free body diagram
A diagram that represents an object and all the forces acting on it. Each force is drawn as an arrow (vector) showing its magnitude and direction. Free body diagrams are essential for applying Newton's laws and analysing motion and equilibrium.
Real World
Engineers designing the 2003 Mars rover used free body diagrams to ensure the parachute, retro-rockets, and weight were balanced correctly during atmospheric entry.
Exam Focus
Label every force with its full name and direction; missing one force is the single most common cause of dropped marks.
