Boyle's law
An ideal gas law stating that at constant temperature, pressure is inversely proportional to volume: PV = constant, or P₁V₁ = P₂V₂. Boyle's law applies when temperature is held fixed.
Formula
p₁V₁ = p₂V₂
Real World
A syringe sealed at the top obeys Boyle's law: pushing the plunger inward halves the volume and doubles the pressure of the trapped air, a principle used in manual bicycle pumps worldwide.
Exam Focus
Boyle's law only applies at constant temperature — if temperature is not explicitly stated as fixed in your answer, you will lose the condition mark.
