Nuclear fusion
The combination of two light nuclei into a heavier nucleus, releasing energy because the product has higher binding energy per nucleon. Example: ²_1 H + ³_1 H → ⁴_2 He + ¹_0 n + 17.6 MeV. Fusion requires high temperature and pressure to overcome the Coulomb barrier. Fusion powers stars and is the basis for thermonuclear weapons and experimental fusion reactors.
Formula
²₁H + ³₁H → ⁴₂He + ¹₀n + 17.6 MeV
Real World
The ITER project in southern France is building a tokamak reactor designed to fuse hydrogen isotopes and produce 500 MW of power from just 50 MW of input — the same reaction that powers the Sun.
Exam Focus
Always state that high temperature overcomes Coulomb repulsion; 'calculate energy released' questions require mass defect × c².
