Category mistake
Category mistake
Real World
Ryle illustrated the category mistake with a visitor touring Oxford who, after seeing all the colleges, libraries, and sports grounds, asks 'but where is the University?' — they expect the University to be a further, separate thing rather than understanding it is constituted by those buildings and practices, just as dualists expect 'mind' to be a separate ghostly thing.
Exam Focus
Explain what logical category Ryle thinks mind-talk actually belongs to (dispositions, not substances) — simply naming the error without explaining it loses marks.
