Oblique intent
Real World
In R v Woollin [1998], a father threw his 3-month-old son onto a hard surface in frustration; though he did not aim to kill, the House of Lords held the jury could find intent if death was a virtual certainty he appreciated.
Exam Focus
Always cite Woollin and state the two-part test: consequence was virtually certain AND defendant appreciated that — both limbs must be addressed.
