In R v Jordan (1956), the defendant stabbed a victim who was recovering well in hospital, but doctors administered an antibiotic the victim was allergic to, causing death. The medical negligence was held to be a novus actus interveniens breaking the chain of causation.
Exam Focus
Always state whether the intervening act was 'reasonably foreseeable' — this determines if the chain is broken.
