Preaching and preparing for the Third Crusade: motives of Pope Gregory VIII; Henry II and Richard I; Philip II of France; Frederick Barbarossa
After Saladin captured Jerusalem in 1187, Europe's leaders began organising a new Crusade. Each leader had different reasons — religious, political and personal — for joining the campaign.
Real World
Philip II of France saw the Crusade primarily as a chance to outmanoeuvre his rival Richard I — much like a modern political leader joining an international coalition partly to gain diplomatic leverage over a competitor.
Exam Focus
When explaining motives, always distinguish between stated (religious) and underlying (political/personal) reasons — examiners reward this distinction explicitly.
