Observation skills, measurement and geospatial mapping skills applied to coastal fieldwork
Coastal fieldwork uses three core skills. You observe and describe features, take numerical measurements, and plot data onto maps to show spatial patterns.
Real World
On Chesil Beach, Dorset, geographers measure pebble size at intervals along the 29 km tombolo to map longshore drift direction — pebbles increase from 2 cm near Bridport to 7 cm at Portland Bill, a spatial pattern only visible once plotted on a map.
Exam Focus
When asked to 'justify your choice of equipment', link each tool directly to the specific coastal process you were measuring.
