Mineral nutrient cycling
Ecosystems continuously reuse the same minerals — such as nitrogen and phosphorus — by cycling them between plants, animals, soil and decomposers. Nothing gets permanently used up.
Real World
In the Amazon rainforest, nutrients cycle rapidly through the biomass store with very little held in the thin, leached soils — which is why clearing the forest for cattle ranching quickly leaves the land infertile.
Exam Focus
Always refer to the Gersmehl model by name and identify all three stores; vague answers about 'nutrients moving around' will not access top marks.
