Geographers sort places into categories based on how we know them. Near places are close to us physically. Far places are distant. Experienced places are ones we have visited. Media places are ones we only know through news, film, or social media.
Real World
Most British teenagers have a detailed, embodied understanding of their local high street (near/experienced place) but know New York primarily through films and Instagram — a media place shaped entirely by selective representation.
