Toxicity
The degree to which a substance can poison or cause harmful effects to organisms.
Real World
Thalidomide, prescribed to pregnant women in the late 1950s, caused severe birth defects in over 10,000 children — demonstrating how a substance with low acute toxicity can have catastrophic teratogenic (developmental) toxicity.
Exam Focus
When discussing toxicity, specify the type (acute, chronic, carcinogenic) and route of exposure; generic answers will not access the top mark band.
