Academic referencing
Formal systems for citing sources (particularly important in NEA). Common systems include footnotes, parenthetical citations, or bibliography-based approaches. Proper referencing credits sources and enables readers to locate them.
Real World
When historian Simon Schama published 'Citizens', every quoted source appeared in numbered footnotes, allowing readers to trace his argument back to original documents — the same principle of academic accountability the NEA demands.
Exam Focus
Use one referencing system throughout your NEA and apply it to every source; inconsistent referencing loses marks for presentation.
