Independent critical study (NEA)
The Non-Exam Assessment (40% of A-level) requiring students to independently select and analyse two texts (one must be poetry) in a 2500-word essay. NEA develops independent research, argument development, and critical engagement skills.
Real World
Like a university dissertation, the NEA rewards students who go beyond classroom discussion — A-grade responses typically draw on at least one critical perspective from the anthology to challenge or complicate their own reading, demonstrating genuine independent scholarly engagement.
Exam Focus
Integrate critical anthology perspectives to challenge, not just support, your argument — this signals independence and earns AO5 marks.
