Soliloquy
In dramatic texts, a speech in which a character alone on stage (or believing themselves alone) speaks their inner thoughts and feelings aloud. The soliloquy reveals character psychology and motivation directly to the audience.
Real World
In the 2019 National Theatre Live broadcast of 'Fleabag', Phoebe Waller-Bridge broke the fourth wall to speak directly to the camera, functioning like a modern soliloquy that let audiences access her character's unfiltered thoughts while other characters remained oblivious.
Exam Focus
Analyse what the soliloquy reveals that dialogue cannot — focus on the gap between public speech and private thought.
