Paradox
A statement or situation that appears logically contradictory or absurd on the surface yet may reveal a deeper truth when examined. Unlike oxymoron (two words), paradox is conceptual and extended, operating across phrases or ideas.
Real World
John Donne's 'Death, Be Not Proud' builds the paradox that 'Death, thou shalt die', arguing that mortality itself is defeated through resurrection — a contradiction that carries the poem's theological argument.
Exam Focus
Distinguish paradox from oxymoron by showing how the contradiction extends across a whole idea, not just two words.
