Bildungsroman
A narrative form (novel or long poem) that traces a protagonist's development from youth or immaturity to adulthood or wisdom, with emphasis on psychological growth, education, and self-discovery. The German term literally means 'formation novel' or 'education novel'.
Real World
Jane Eyre charts Jane's journey from orphaned child to independent woman, mirroring the real experience of many Victorian women navigating rigid social hierarchies — Brontë uses the form to argue that moral character, not class, defines a person's worth.
Exam Focus
When analysing bildungsroman, track specific moments of change — examiners reward structured argument about HOW growth occurs, not just THAT it occurs.
