Jargon
Specialized vocabulary or expressions used within a particular profession or social group that can be obscure to outsiders. Jargon can enable efficient communication or exclude non-members.
Real World
NHS doctors use terms like 'acute myocardial infarction' rather than 'heart attack' in clinical notes — precise for colleagues, but alienating for patients reading their own records.
Exam Focus
When analysing jargon, always comment on both its inclusive function for insiders and exclusive effect on outsiders.
