Hyperbole
A figure of speech that uses extreme exaggeration for emphasis or effect. Hyperbole intentionally overstates reality to create emphasis or emotional impact.
Real World
When Boris Johnson said Brexit would unleash 'a tidal wave of investment,' the extreme exaggeration was designed to build public confidence rather than describe a literal flood.
Exam Focus
Always link hyperbole to the speaker's purpose — persuasion, humour, or emphasis — rather than simply noting exaggeration.
