Implicature
An implied meaning that is not explicitly stated but can be inferred from what is said in context. Implicatures arise when speakers violate Grice's maxims intentionally.
Real World
When a referee asked about a player's performance says 'He always turns up on time', the implicature is that the player has no other positive qualities — despite nothing negative being stated.
Exam Focus
Always identify which maxim is flouted to generate the implicature; examiners expect the full chain of reasoning.
