Pitch
The frequency of vocal cord vibration, perceived as highness or lowness of the voice. Pitch can be fixed (overall speaking pitch) or variable (used to create intonation patterns).
Real World
Margaret Thatcher famously worked with a vocal coach to lower her habitual pitch before becoming Prime Minister, because research showed lower-pitched voices were perceived as more authoritative and credible by voters and media audiences.
Exam Focus
Link pitch variation to speaker purpose — state what the pitch change achieves, not just that it occurs.
