Intonation
The pattern of pitch change across an utterance, ranging from high to low tones. Intonation conveys attitudes, emotions, and grammatical meaning in speech.
Real World
Australian English speakers are often perceived as constantly asking questions because of 'uptalk' — a rising intonation at the end of statements — which British listeners may misinterpret as uncertainty, even when the speaker is making a confident assertion.
Exam Focus
Distinguish rising intonation from high pitch; intonation is a pattern across an utterance, not a single note.
