Median
The middle value of a dataset when arranged in ascending or descending order. For an even number of values, it is the average of the two middle values. For grouped data, interpolation is used within the median class.
Real World
When Rightmove reports that the median UK house price is £270,000, they use the median rather than the mean because a handful of multi-million-pound London penthouses would drag the average upward.
Exam Focus
For grouped data, show full interpolation working — examiners award method marks for identifying the median class and substituting correctly.
