Carbon Sequestration
Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide and storing it in long-term sinks such as soils, forests, oceans, or geological formations. It can occur naturally through photosynthesis or artificially through technology and land use management.
Real World
The Drax power station in Yorkshire has invested in Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), burning biomass and capturing the resulting CO2 underground — a real attempt at engineered negative emissions at industrial scale.
Exam Focus
Separate natural sequestration (peatlands, forests) from technological sequestration (CCS); 'evaluate' questions require you to weigh effectiveness and cost.
