Abrasion
A process of mechanical erosion where sediment particles, suspended and rolled by wave action, scrape and grind against rock surfaces, removing material and smoothing relief features.
Real World
The wave-cut platforms at Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire, show clear parallel scratches and grooves left by abrasion as storm-driven sandstone pebbles scraped across the exposed rock surface.
Exam Focus
Use 'corrasion' as a synonym if needed, but always specify that sediment carried by waves does the grinding — not the water alone.
