Drainage Basin
A drainage basin is an open system consisting of a land area whose water is collected by a river and its tributaries. It is bounded by a watershed or divide and contains multiple inputs (precipitation, groundwater), flows (interception, infiltration, throughflow), and outputs (evapotranspiration, streamflow) that operate interdependently.
Real World
The River Severn drainage basin covers approximately 11,420 km² of Wales and England, demonstrating how a watershed boundary defines which precipitation feeds a single river system.
Exam Focus
Always state that a drainage basin is an open system and give both an input and output — closed system errors lose marks immediately.
