Earthquake Mechanisms
Earthquake mechanisms involve the build-up and sudden release of stress in the Earth's crust, primarily through tectonic plate movement. As plates move, friction prevents smooth motion, causing stress to accumulate in rock. When stress exceeds the strength of rock, sudden rupture occurs along a fault, releasing energy as seismic waves.
Real World
The 2010 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.0) killed over 200,000 people partly because stress had been accumulating along the Enriquillo–Plantain Garden fault for 240 years without a major release.
Exam Focus
Use the term 'elastic rebound theory' and explain the stress build-up and sudden release sequence to demonstrate higher-level understanding.
