Tsunami
A tsunami is a series of ocean waves generated primarily by sudden, large-scale disturbance of water, most commonly submarine earthquakes at subduction zones. Tsunami waves travel across ocean basins at speeds of 500-800 km/h in deep water but slow and increase in height when approaching shallow coastal areas.
Real World
The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, triggered by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra, travelled at over 700 km/h across the ocean and reached heights of 30 m onshore, killing approximately 230,000 people across 14 countries.
Exam Focus
Always explain wave behaviour change from deep to shallow water — marks depend on showing the process of wave shoaling.
