Water Budget
A water budget (or water balance) is a quantitative analysis of inputs, flows, and outputs of water in a drainage basin or region using the equation: Precipitation = Discharge + Evapotranspiration ± Change in Storage. It demonstrates how precipitation is distributed among runoff, evapotranspiration, and groundwater storage.
Real World
The UK Met Office uses water budget calculations for the Thames basin to predict reservoir levels each summer, helping Thames Water decide when to impose hosepipe bans.
Exam Focus
In 'calculate' or 'use the data' questions, always state the water budget equation and show your working to secure method marks.
