Hard Engineering Solutions
Hard engineering solutions are structural measures that directly control water flow through concrete or concrete-reinforced structures such as dams, levees, flood walls, and channelization. These are high-cost, permanent interventions that physically alter river systems to prevent flooding and enable water storage.
Real World
China's Three Gorges Dam, completed in 2006, is the world's largest hard engineering project: it controls flooding along the Yangtze, generates 22,500 MW of electricity, but displaced 1.3 million people and caused severe ecosystem damage.
Exam Focus
For evaluation questions, always counter hard engineering benefits with environmental costs — high marks require explicit comparison, not one-sided description.
