Veblen Goods
Veblen goods, also called positional goods, are goods where higher prices actually increase demand because consumers desire status, exclusivity, or assume high price signals quality. This violates the law of demand due to psychological rather than economic factors.
Real World
In 2023 Hermès raised the price of its Birkin bag above £10,000 yet waiting lists grew longer, because the higher price reinforced the bag's status as an exclusive symbol of wealth.
Exam Focus
Distinguish Veblen goods from Giffen goods — Veblen is driven by status and psychology, Giffen by the income effect on staples.
