Control unit
The component directing CPU operation by decoding instructions and generating control signals. Control unit translates opcodes to hardware signals controlling data flow and operations. Microprogramming or hardwired logic implements control.
Real World
The control unit works like an air traffic controller at Heathrow — it doesn't fly the planes itself but sends precise timing signals telling each runway, gate, and taxiway when to act, just as it tells the ALU, registers, and buses what to do each clock cycle.
Exam Focus
When describing FDE cycle, explicitly state the control unit's role at each stage — 'coordinates' alone is too vague.
