Acid anhydrides
Acid anhydrides
Formula
(RCO)₂O + R'OH → RCOOR' + RCOOH
Real World
Aspirin is manufactured by reacting salicylic acid with ethanoic anhydride rather than ethanoyl chloride, because the anhydride is cheaper, less corrosive, and produces ethanoic acid as a by-product instead of toxic HCl fumes.
Exam Focus
Remember that anhydrides produce a carboxylic acid by-product, not HCl — a common mark-scheme distinction from acyl chlorides.
