Amphoteric hydroxides
Amphoteric hydroxides
Formula
Al(OH)₃ + 3HCl → AlCl₃ + 3H₂O; Al(OH)₃ + NaOH → NaAlO₂ + 2H₂O
Real World
Aluminium hydroxide is the active ingredient in antacid tablets like Gaviscon, neutralising excess stomach acid — yet in water treatment plants it reacts with added alkali to form soluble aluminate, exploiting its amphoteric nature to remove impurities.
Exam Focus
Write both acid and base reactions for Al(OH)₃; examiners expect balanced equations showing each behaviour separately.
