Buffer solutions
Formula
pH = pKa + log₁₀([A⁻] / [HA])
Real World
Human blood is buffered at pH 7.4 by the carbonic acid–hydrogencarbonate system (H₂CO₃/HCO₃⁻); without this buffer, even a small amount of lactic acid from exercise would cause fatal pH drops.
Exam Focus
Explain buffer action in two parts: how added acid is removed and how added base is removed, with equations for each.
