Gross and microscopic structure of skeletal muscle
Skeletal muscle has a layered structure, from the whole muscle you can see down to tiny fibres visible only under a microscope. Each level of organisation helps the muscle generate and transmit force.
Real World
Chicken breast is a single skeletal muscle — if you pull it apart you can see the fascicles (stringy bundles), and under a microscope each fibre reveals the striped pattern of sarcomeres that gives 'striated' muscle its name.
Exam Focus
Learn the hierarchy: muscle → fascicle → muscle fibre → myofibril → sarcomere, and name the connective tissue wrapping at each level.
Evaluation Scaffold
A four-step framework for high-quality evaluation. Use this for 'assess', 'evaluate', and 'to what extent' questions.
