Students will not be required to calculate standard deviations in written papers
You will never need to calculate a standard deviation in an AQA Biology exam. You do need to read, interpret, and compare standard deviation values that are given to you.
Real World
In a 2024 AQA paper, students were given two population means with standard deviations of ±0.3 and ±2.7 and asked which population showed greater variation — no calculation was needed, only comparison of the SD values.
Exam Focus
When given SD values, comment on overlap of ranges (mean ± SD) to judge whether differences between groups are likely significant.
Evaluation Scaffold
A four-step framework for high-quality evaluation. Use this for 'assess', 'evaluate', and 'to what extent' questions.
