Translation as the production of polypeptides from the sequence of codons carried by mRNA; the roles of ribosomes, tRNA and ATP
Translation is the process where a ribosome reads the mRNA sequence and builds a protein. Transfer RNA molecules bring the correct amino acids, joining them into a chain called a polypeptide.
Real World
The antibiotic streptomycin, used to treat bacterial infections, works by binding to bacterial ribosomes and causing misreading of mRNA codons — directly disrupting translation and halting bacterial protein synthesis.
Exam Focus
State that ATP is used to activate amino acids and attach them to tRNA; simply saying 'ATP provides energy' without this detail often loses a mark.
